ちょっと前に、自分のメールボックスを「Welcome to Amazon Web Services」で検索するのが流行っていました。これで検索すると、一番最初にAWSを使いだした時期が解るのです。初々しい頃を思い出すのはいいですよね。
自分のプライベートのGmailを検索してみると、2006年3月30日でした。古参でしょ、ドヤ！！
2007年4月4日にもあるのは謎です。記憶では、2006年にS3を試してみてすぐに飽きて、EC2が出た後にまた再開してたはずです。ただ、なんでWelcomeメールが２通あるのかは謎です。謎はおいておいたままに、この２通のWelcomeメールを見ていると、微妙な発見があります。

まずは１通目 2006年3月30日のメールです。

２通目 SQSが消えました。どういう扱いになったのでしょう？

最初のAWSは何かという論争で、結論的にはSQSに落ち着くことが多いです。このメールからも、それが見て取れるでしょう。ところで、ここにあるE-Commerce Serviceとは何でしょうか？これは、現在ではProduct Advertising API と呼ばれるAmazonのサービスで、Amazonの商品の一覧や詳細を取得できるサービスです。Amazonがヒットした理由の一つに、アフィリエイトの仕組みを上手く使って様々なWebサイトから商品紹介を受けるようになったというのがあります。直接的な送客と、リンクをはられることによるSEO的な効果です。それを支えているのが、このE-Commerce Service（Product Advertising API ）です。商品リンクをプログラム的に作れるという強みがあります。私もよく使っていました。当初Amazonは、このE-Commerce Serviceをもって、Amazon Web Serviceと称していました。
この時点のAWSは、複数人で利用されることをほぼ考慮されていませんでした。IAMというものは存在せず、ルートアカウントに紐づくアクセスキーとシークレットアクセスキーを使うという牧歌的なサービスです。紹介しているWelcomeメールも、多くの人がS3を使うためではなくE-Commerce Serviceを個人で使うために申し込んでいたんでしょうね。当時を思い出しながら、メールの文面から読み解いてみました。
